Chapter 15

Mind Officially Blown

ELLA

Troy should have left four freakin’ days ago.

Instead, he’s still here and still making all of our lives miserable. Hell, he’s probably even making his own miserable—he’s just too cantankerous to care.

I tie my sneakers, pulling the strings so tight they snap. Clenching my jaw, I raise my eyes to the ceiling and slowly whisper, “Fuuuck.”

Now, not only am I dealing with the added stress of figuring out how I’m going to get Troy through a tour at a pack-run school tomorrow, but I also need to buy new laces before I can even go on my run. This was supposed to relieve the tension, dammit. Not make it worse.

“Forget your own strength?” Asher asks, bounding down the stairs.

I shift my gaze from the tatters of laces in my hand, to him. My expression is deadpan.

Asher’s eyes widen and he raises his hands. “Hey, don’t kill the messenger.”

“You weren’t the messenger. You’re Captain Obvious,” I fire back.

“Yeesh, someone’s crabby.”

I stand up and chuck the laces in the garbage. “Yeah, well, I’m not the only one who has to bring your dad into a pack school and hope he doesn’t clue into anything weird.”

He makes a face, dropping his chin to his chest. “I forgot about that.”

“Good thing one of us is on the ball, then, eh?” I kick off my shoes and leave them right where they lie as I make my way back up to my bedroom.

I’m meant to meet Alanna for coffee in an hour. There’s no way I’m going to get shoelaces, go for my run, and be showered with enough time. Instead, I may as well look over my article for Jinx one last time.

On the upside, unlike the erectile dysfunction article from my previous job, this one practically wrote itself.

To be fair, Asher and Stone gave me so much to work with, it was easy to keep the piece light and fun while showcasing the zip-line park as a great place to spend an afternoon with the family. Granted, I had to keep out the part about the ex showing up and ruining the end of it.

And here we are.

I’m still shocked that Jinx hasn’t been able to get Troy to second-guess his decision to stay in Black Crater. There is either something seriously wrong with her abilities—or something seriously wrong with him.

I’m inclined to believe the latter.

As it is, I’m trying my best to keep my head in the game when it comes to the pack and its territory breach. I let things slide for a bit there, but I can’t let Troy’s presence derail me from my role as Alpha.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m grateful that Stone and Marta handled things for a while, but I need to be a big girl and step up. I’m the Alpha here and I can do hard things. Even if it means focusing on the pack and my imploding personal life.

One thing that’s been playing on my mind with this invading pack… Why
